1-Introduction
With this video course, I want to share with you all that my 23 years of mold-making has taught me.
I have watched many instructional videos on different subjects where I end up with more questions than answers. In this mold-making course, I walk you step-by-step through the whole process and fill in the blanks so you can successfully make a great mold.
Molds are an investment and I want your project to succeed.
2-Shimming
In this chapter, I talk about the importance of shimming and the reasons for it. Each mold is so individual. Quite often, the decisions you make on shimming will be the difference between a good mold that is a pleasure to use for years, or a mold that causes you grief and is forever a pain in the ass!
3-Rubber Molds
This chapter is so important as you are trying to get the very best imprint of your sculpture. It’s not always the product that goes wrong-it can be the way it’s applied that makes all the difference. A mold loaded with air bubbles and not mixed properly is a rubber mold you’ll be redoing in no time. This is where you can burn really good money if you don’t do it right!
4-Fibreglass Mother Mold
This chapter is focussed on the mother mold. Mother molds don’t flex. (if they do, you’ve got a problem!) The lines you pick are very critical on this mold. My very first mold is buried in some city dump because I blew it on this step! What a learning curve and a good chunk of money wasted on rubber! The shim lines are different than the flange lines that you pick for your mother mold. Listen up!
5-Pulling apart & Conclusion
It’s not over yet! In this section I want to talk about certain tricks on popping off your mold. We want to “pop” it off but it doesn’t always work that way. This is more about the don’ts-especially because you’re almost finished and you want to get it done.
Your molds are an investment…in the amount of work that you’ve put into the sculpture and then the amount of casting and the quality of the casting that you’ll pull out of the molds.
Remember…if the studio is burning, run for the molds and save them as they are what will keep producing for you!
All the best! Nathan
